What is LifeHoops?

LifeHoops is a Charlotte-based program that combines basketball, mentorship, and academics. Its goal is to empower young men to achieve and inspire them to become leaders in their communities. LifeHoops is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in partnership with the Charlotte YMCA to create a safe afterschool environment where participants accelerate their academic achievements, learn what it means to be a part of a team, and enhance their basketball skills under guided coaching.

Our Mission

Develop future leaders committed to academic excellence, healthy decision-making, and the advancement of their communities.

Why LifeHoops?

Because when commitment meets opportunity, dreams are realized.

  • A 2013 study by Harvard and UC Berkley ranked Charlotte 50th out of 50 in economic mobility among large US cities - specifically, the ability for a child born in the bottom fifth of income groups to rise to the top fifth as an adult. We aim to hep change that narrative.
  • 78,000 Mecklenburg County students live in poverty with little access to out-of-school enrichment programs.
  • Studies have shown children who participate in high-quality programs outside of school make better grades, have fewer behavior problems, and perform better on tests.
  • Statistics show the hours of 3-5 p.m. are peak times for juvenile crime, substance abuse and sexual promiscuity among teens. After-school programs lessen exposure to these negative elements.
  • Studies have shown team sports can positively affect personal development among young people, in areas such as self-esteem, goal-setting, and leadership.
  • Evidence indicates that quality of coaching is a key factor in maximizing the positive effects of physical activity and team sports for young people.
  • Basketball is a team sport which requires contribution and cooperation and teaches invaluable life skills like hard work and teamwork.
