A Note on Summer

Fighting Summer Learning Loss

The LifeHoops program is working hard to combat summer learning loss – a loss of academic skills and knowledge that many kids experience during their summer break. A number of recent studies have found that students score worse on tests at the end of the summer than they do at the beginning. We’re working with all LifeHoops participants to stay engaged with their academics through the summer!

Fun Activities

We are very excited for the summer and for our boys to get unique experiences they normally wouldn’t have gotten, in addition to academic achievement and basketball skills training. Here are some of the fun activities we’ve been doing this summer:

  • 7/17 – Community service at Anne Springs Greenway.  We painted a shed, pulled weeds, and laid mulch.
  • 7/24 – Visit to Red Ventures for a tour, bowling, and basketball
  • 7/31 – Offsite community service at ARMS (setting up books and classrooms and stuff envelopes)
  • 8/2 – A trip to the movies
  • 8/11 – ProCamps Impact Camp with MKG
  • 8/12-8/13 – ProCamps Impact Camp with Kemba Walker and Jeremy Lamb
  • 8/14 – Visit to Camp Canaan for team building exercises
  • 8/21 – Offsite community service at Hope Haven (serving dinner to chemically dependent adults population)
